...and then

Worth a thousand words?

You know how you look at a couple sitting at a restaurant and wonder exactly what their relationship is? Whether they're married or just seeing each other? Colleagues or friends? You watch a family rushing somewhere, all dressed up and wonder where they're going. Is it s wedding, a party, do they like these people they're going to meet?

If you have no idea what I am talking about then just consider me odd and move on. But if you do, then you'll know we all make stories up. My brother looks at windows of people's homes in apartment buildings as we pass by in a car and wonders what kind of a life there is inside those yellow squares, lending the drapery more importance than ever was envisioned.

In the spirit of crowdsourcing, and if you are entirely indulgent of me, I'd love to hear the stories you imagine. I'd also love it if you could look at these pictures and tell me a little story that it inspires in you. Alternatively, tell me which picture you like best: I'd like to build a story on the one that gets the most votes. (Assuming I have more than five readers left.)

Also, please feel free to take this up as a tag, if you like. Use my pictures if you want (just link them back here and credit me) or use your own.

I the love the picture of the runners. I like it because it has all the elements I adore; the sea, the sand the beach.I love the idea of running with the wind in my hair and the sand on my feet. The picture inspires me to imagine a love story of two best friends. You know like how two best friends date everyone else in the world only to realise in they end that they are perfect for each other.

I love windows. There is so much to imagination to be lent to an open window, no?

I don't have a "passion for photugraphy" :P but the barbed wires are pretty neat I think.

Been a while since I've been here. Will read over the weekend.

I like this idea! Everyone who has a photo blog should do this.

And I like all three pictures. The last one isn't 'Love dies' for me though. It's more like, 'Love in spite of' - the thorns, of course. Yes, I'm very corny like that. Also, I'm happy these days.

The story behind the second one - a girl in the middle of a very messy marriage, looking at lights at her best friend's wedding and drifting into the flashback when she was actually happy :D I'm sorry, I'm just really happy.

And the first one is a couple running - behind is the guy the girl is secretly having a crush on. No, they are not cheating. Just mutual crush between girl and the guy behind. But of course, 'Scotty doesn't know' ;-D

I suspect I'm also slightly warped.

I don't think that picture is Love Dies..In my book, it would be a Hard Bargain..the prickly heart with little burrs put out, each burr like a little keloid scar left by a broken relationship or a sad memory. The heart is always whole, each little burr is the new firewall for any new entry...:)

Philosophical?? It was just a random thought..so pretty unpolished..

The runners image is my favorite. It reminds me of those times where I used to run with my best friend and fiance who no longer exists in this world. Plus it is has all of my favorite elements, the beach, dusk, and the running.

I am possibly one of your lurkers from Singapore – just trying to catch up on what’s happening in Oman. We left a few months ago to live with five million other people on an island measuring 45km x 25km. Outside of Muscat, there is a sense of freedom and openness that does not exist here in Singapore. We miss it very much. But, there are plenty of new places to discover, new people to meet, new languages in which to dabble and new blogs to write. Your beach photo just took me back there for a while. Thank you.

The runners look like they've just done something a bit naughty and are running away from something or someone. Maybe they were skinny dipping and got caught? :)

SS: Come back soon :)

Shalini: It's amazing why we like the things that we like. All the comments here have made me smile and feel privileged. Best friends love story -- always the best kind. You're a romantic Shalini :)

Notgogol: You didn't miss much, just me with a long face :) Another thing that inspires the voyuer in me -- doors that are left ajar.

Judy: Ah! I could do with a serious spot of happiness but I thnk I am getting there so I'll provide it myself :P I said love dies for that because of the stake-like thing going through the heart. But I like your optimism also :). "Scotty doesn't know"-- I like :D

Journomust: I like Hard Bargain! When it comes as true as that, it rarely needs polish :) Thanks!

Rummy: We're strangers to each other but you know when I read your comment, I felt a measure of what you must be going through thinking of your fiance. I am deeply sorry for your loss. And thank you-- from the very bottom of my heart -- for sharing it on this space. Do you still run?

Mr Steve: You're welcome to lurk all you want. I was just kidding there :) I am glad you're staying in touch with Muscat and I hope you enjoy singapore thoroughly. And welcome to the blog. I hope I can bring more of Muscat to you even though I realise I write mostly personal stuff. :)

3ps: I can always trust you to give me perspective that I would have missed myself. Running away, indeed :) Thanks!

Several years ago I used to take the tube in Kolkata to get to my tuition classes. And I would see hundreds of people returning from work or going some place else. I had a ride of about 45 mins. I would pick at least 5 people and try to imagine their lives. Funny how your post reminded my of this little game I used to play in my head. Back then there were no Ipods and it was impossible to read a book trying to keep standing in a crowded train. The background on the runners is very well done. I do not have a story for the pictures but I loved the post. Have been away from blogging for a while. Will be back to read the older posts. Sorry about the long comment. ;)

Love dies? No.
She put up a barbed wire fence around her heart, to keep out the unwanted ones. And then one fine day, he pried open the wires and entered. But he got hurt, badly, even before he came close to her heart. And died.
The years passed by and everyone else who tried to enter got hurt. And then they stopped trying.
The wires rusted. And weeds grew around the fence.
Then one fine day, the heart tried to come outside instead. She pried open the rusted wires, cut through the thorny weeds and stepped out.
And in 24 hours, got tetanus and died.

I prefer being anonymous. Hiding behind a barbed wire fence myself.

Anon:Thanks. I used a d-90 for this one and yes it was taken on the Shati a; Qurum.

LEM: There you are :) and thank you. What an entertaining game to occupy yourself with. Also challenging because after a point you run out of stories, right? Long comment? You haven't seen some of mine :P Welcome back, though. I remember thinking of you a couple of weeks ago and wondering where you were.

Anon: You're more than welcome to be anonymous here :) As long as you keep reading my stuff, I am happy. Interesting story. Made me laugh although I am not sure that was your intention. I think we all have a case of tetanus-infested ventricles, if not entire hearts. I like.

Hmm. Dont have anything to weave around these images, but I must say I like the shots! The barbed wire fence especially.
